Mechanical Engineer – GSE and Tooling Design

Terran Orbital Corporation is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer – GSE and Tooling Design. The Mechanical Engineer – GSE and Tooling Design will report to the Mechanical Engineering Manager and will support the mechanical engineering team efforts in design, analysis, build and test of spacecraft and its subsystems. You will apply your technical expertise to design, analyze, prototype, and build Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and Tooling in support of satellite production and testing.

This position will own GSE and tooling hardware responsibilities across all many programs and will interact regularly with other members of multiple product teams. The perfect candidate will be strong in hands-on experience, mechanical intuition, and employ a ground-up approach to problem solving. Incumbent will have strong technical and interpersonal skills and will thrive in a creative, scrappy, and collaborative environment with a strong drive to continue to augment technical skills.


  • In coordination with a multi-disciplinary team, identify, develop requirements for, design, and deliver to production Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE) and Tooling in support of the assembly, integration and test of spacecraft, spacecraft systems and components, to include lifting equipment, working platforms, assembly fixtures, test fixtures, jigs, or aids.
  • Support the development of production, assembly, and test flow and concepts of operation, especially with respect to required GSE and Tooling.
  • Create and maintain CAD models of GSE/Tooling assemblies and components.
  • In coordination with subject-matter-expert analysis team, perform design-oriented analysis of GSE and tooling applications.
  • Create or update drawings, procedures and reports (assembly, integration, test, commissioning) and engineering change orders for GSE assemblies and components.
  • Collaborate with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, automation engineers and production personnel on implementing design for manufacturing and assembly best practices.
  • Support Assembly, Integration, and Test teams on the production floor as related to GSE and Tooling use, to include conducting prototype/initial run assembly operations.
  • Ownership for delivering GSE for production use, up to and including assembly, testing, and training on appropriate use of the equipment/tooling.
  • Perform other tasks, as assigned, in support of the Mechanical Design team objectives.


  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 1-5 years professional experience in relevant mechanical systems in aerospace, defense, automotive or related industry.
  • Mechanical design and analysis experience using CAD, hand calculations and analysis tools.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles.
  • Experience in hardware manufacturing: assembly, integration, testing, fabrication, machining, etc.
  • Able to own assigned projects and efforts from end-to-end.
  • Experience building and fixing things (cars, bikes, motorcycles, robots, woodworking projects, R/C anything, or anything else mechanical).


  • Experience establishing build flow and production concepts of operations for large volume production.
  • Proficient with all types of hand tools and basic fabrication equipment. Hands on experience building hardware.
  • Familiar with ASME Y14 series specifications including ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with SolidWorks & EPDM.
  • Hardware ownership.
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Strong digital literacy (MS Office, MS PowerPoint, and tools such as Jira and Confluence).
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
