Terran Orbital is seeking a motivated Senior Motor Controls Engineer based at our Irvine, CA, location. Terran Orbital is a leading worldwide provider of nanosatellite and microsatellite vehicles, services, and solutions to commercial and government customers.

You will join a collaborative team to develop innovative small satellite vehicle solutions for multiple projects. The individual will contribute towards the design of spacecraft actuators, including Reaction Wheels and Solar Array Drive Assemblies (SADA) capable of withstanding launch vehicle and space environments. Responsibilities include analysis, high-fidelity modeling, and design/implementation of the current, torque, and speed control loops. The ideal candidate will have experience in motor control systems, servo, stepper, BLDC motors, embedded systems, control theory, digital signal processing, micro-vibration analysis, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), software (C, Matlab, Simulink), and communication protocols (RS422, SPI, I2C, HDLC, CRC, etc.).

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• End-to-end product development cycle technical responsibility, from initial concept and design to qualification model assembly and test.
• Design and optimization of motor commutation and control algorithms
• Digital control using Microcontrollers and 3-phase power filter design for motor
• Perform micro-vibration testing and analysis (Kistler instrumentations preferred)
• Generate, maintain, and update actuator models and software in C, Matlab, and Simulink.
• Component selection, including permanent magnet motors, encoders, bearings, and electronics
• Generate, maintain, update, and formally release design documentation
• Perform work in an office, lab, and cleanroom environment.
• Generation of test plans for design verification and test oversight.
• Participation in hardware requirement generation in collaboration with multiple teams.
• Collaborative design of vehicle configuration.
• Generate technical content in support of internal and external design reviews.
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• B.S or M.S. in Engineering with a concentration in mechatronics and control systems
• 5+ years of relevant experience
• Strong background in motor control systems, embedded systems, simulation, and vibration analysis.
• Proficiency in C, Matlab, and Simulink
• Proficient in the use of laboratory equipment
• High attention to detail; ability to preempt design/manufacturing/procurement issues.

Additional Differentiators

• Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics with a focus on control systems
• Experience in space applications is highly desirable.
• Experience with Matlab/Simulink Autocoding
• Experience in the areas of frequency response analysis, micro-vibration, and on-orbit/jitter analysis
• Active U.S. Government-issued security clearance
